Community Spotlight

"Going back to school for electrical engineering later in life was a major confidence booster for me. It is never too late to start something new. I also like to practice gratitude. I have a note on my mirror that says "3 Things". It reminds me to think of 3 things that I'm grateful for. Some days are easier than others to think of 3 things, but with practice it gets easier."

How have you built confidence and resilience over the years?

Going back to school for electrical engineering later in life was a major confidence booster for me.  It is never too late to start something new.  I also like to practice gratitude.  I have a note on my mirror that says "3 Things".  It reminds me to think of 3 things that I'm grateful for.  Some days are easier than others to think of 3 things, but with practice it gets easier.  It can be as simple as I'm grateful for food in my belly, clothes to protect me from the elements, and shelter.  Or it can be elaborate, I'm grateful for the opportunity to go back to school so that I can have a career in engineering, my family and friends, and my dog Stella.

What advice would you give young adults when it comes to navigating imposter syndrome and perfectionism?

The best advice I found for this was a keynote speech by Jayshree Seth of 3M.  Jayshree talks about how we can look back to other times when we overcame something to build strength to succeed with accomplishing new things.  Everyone I have shared this speech with has benefitted in some way.  Whenever self-doubt begins to creep in, I watch this speech again to remind myself of her technique.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g_7AUMTA-co

What advice would you give the next generation of leaders?

I highly recommend the Dale Carnegie course.  It dives deep into the Dale Carnegie principles from "How to Win Friends and Influence People" and takes it a step further by bringing you out of your comfort zone and building your public speaking skills.
