The Smart Cities program immerses students in the innovative realm of urban technology, exploring how data, sensors, and advanced systems contribute to building more efficient and sustainable cities. Participants engage in hands-on projects, gaining insights into urban planning, Internet of Things, and cutting-edge technologies shaping the future of urban living.

Smart Cities goes beyond the classroom.

Throughout the program, students participate in industry-led learning days, where professionals visit to teach how smart technology is used in real businesses and systems.

Past partners include:

  • BHE Renewables — smart energy and sustainability
  • Clayton Farms — agricultural innovation and technology

These sessions give students a front-row seat to how smart tech powers industries across Iowa and beyond.

Who Can Join?

This program is open to students in grades 9–12 at all experience levels—no prior background required. It’s designed for curious minds who want to explore how technology can shape and strengthen our cities, from urban planning and agriculture to healthcare and beyond.

How to Get Involved?

Registration for the Smart Cities Program will open soon. Transportation will be provided to students who need it.

Who can participate in the AI Innovation Challenge?
Any student attending college and pursuing an undergraduate degree in the state of Iowa. Participants are required to sign up in teams of 3-5 students.
I don't know how to code. Can I still participate?
Yes! This challenge was created to be accessible to students in any field of study, with or without a technical background or experience working with AI.
What criteria will be used to evaluate submissions?
Sign up to get more information on submission requirements and details pertaining to the challenge
What is expected of mentors?
Mentors are expected to share high-level advice and insights to inspire teams, not provide detailed plans or advice on using AI programs. The focus is on encouragement to foster creativity and problem-solving.
What AI programs and resources are available for teams?
